Faculty on topic: Malone discusses human rights and Syria
Recently, international law and human rights expert Linda Malone shared with William & Mary News her thoughts on the ongoing conflict in Syria following a diplomatic agreement for the Syrian government to turn over its chemical weapons to the international community.
Speaking about the ambitious timetable for collection and destruction of these weapons, she said that “Syria has until mid-2014 to destroy its chemical weapon arsenal or turn it over to inspectors for disposal. That’s a very quick timetable for conducting a very complicated operation.”

Even if chemical weapons are removed from the situation, Malone said the conflict is far from over and still potentially destructive.
“The Assad regime is engaging in atrocities and will probably intensify its efforts to destroy its opposition. The real losers in this situation are the civilians.”

Malone is the Marshall-Wythe Foundation Professor of Law and Founding Director of the Human Security Law Center at the William & Mary Law School as well as the author or co-author of twelve books on international law, human rights, and environmental law.
